Founded by John Nimmo in County Durham in 1826, Castle Eden Brewery has a long and distinguished history in North East brewing.
Under the Nimmo family, it grew to a capacity of 75,000 barrels and an estate of 125 pubs before being acquired by Whitbread PLC in 1963. The brewery later expanded further, including producing the renowned Mackeson Stout.
Following changes in ownership and relocation to Seaham in 2014, the business developed its contract brewing and packaging operations while continuing to produce Castle Eden Ales. Acquired by Powder Monkey Group in May 2025, the brewery continues its brewing operations while working to bring the historic Castle Eden brand to a wider audience.
